How to Choose Your Inseam Length by Height

Not sure which inseam length to buy? Use our height-based chart to find the right fit — from cropped to full-length — and shop our favorite pairs for every height.

Quick answer

Under 5'2": 24–27" inseam  ·  5'2"–5'5": 26–29"  ·  5'5"–5'8": 28–32"  ·  5'8" and up: 30–34". Then adjust for your shoes and the leg shape you love.

Finding the right inseam length is one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps in buying jeans that actually fit. The wrong inseam can make even the most flattering cut look off. Here's how to find yours, plus our favorite pairs for every height.

What Is Inseam Length?

Inseam is the measurement from the crotch seam to the hem of the pant. It determines where the leg of your jeans falls — at the ankle, mid-calf, or pooling at the floor. Most jeans come in inseam lengths from 24" to 34".

Your height Best inseam Where it lands Shop

5'2"–5'5" 26"–29" Ankle — grazes the ankle bone Ankle Length
5'5"–5'8" 28"–32" Ankle or full length, depending on style Ankle / Full Length
5'8" and up 30"–34" Full length — covers the ankle Full Length Jeans

Use this as a starting point. Your preferred rise, shoe height, and how you like your jeans to break will all influence the final fit.

Under 5'2" — Cropped (24"–27")

Cropped inseams hit at a flattering point and avoid bunching at the ankle. Barrel and straight crops are especially easy to wear.

Petite picks

5'2" – 5'5" — Ankle Length (26"–29")

Ankle-length inseams graze the ankle for a clean, modern look that works with sneakers, flats, and boots.

Ankle-length picks

5'5" – 5'8" — The Most Flexible Range (28"–32")

You can go ankle (28"–30") or full length (30"–32") depending on the silhouette. Cuffed styles let you adjust the length yourself.

Mid-height picks

5'8" and Above — Full Length (30"–34")

Full-length inseams give you the coverage and proportion you need, especially in straight, bootcut, and flare cuts.

Inseam and Silhouette: What to Know

  • Flare and wide-leg styles generally look best with a longer inseam — the extra length lets the leg open up fully. See our Flare Jeans.
  • Straight and slim cuts are more forgiving across inseam lengths. Browse Straight Leg Jeans.
  • Bootcut styles are designed to sit over a boot heel — a 30"–32" inseam is typically ideal. Browse our Bootcut Jeans.
  • Cuffed styles are intentionally cropped with a rolled hem — the inseam is built into the design. Shop our Cuffed Style Jeans.

How to Measure Your Inseam at Home

  1. Put on a pair of pants that fit you well.
  2. With a soft measuring tape, measure from the crotch seam straight down to where you want the hem to fall.
  3. That number is your inseam. Round to the nearest half-inch.

Tip: every product page on Salt Tree lists the inseam in the title, so you can match your number before you buy.
