Flare jeans are one of the most flattering — and most misunderstood — denim silhouettes. When styled correctly, they elongate the leg, balance proportions, and create a polished, fashion-forward look. The key is knowing how to adapt the styling to your height. Here's how.
Why Flare Jeans Work for (Almost) Everyone
Flare jeans are fitted through the hip and thigh, then open dramatically below the knee. This creates a strong vertical line that draws the eye downward — which is why they're so effective at making legs look longer. The trick is making sure the flare hits at the right point and the hem grazes the floor (or close to it).
Styling Flare Jeans If You're Petite (Under 5'4")
Flare jeans can be incredibly flattering for petite frames — but the styling has to be intentional.
- Wear a heel. This is the most important rule. A heel — even a small one — lifts the hem off the floor and lets the flare open up fully. A platform sandal, block heel, or wedge all work well.
- Tuck in your top. A tucked-in blouse or bodysuit defines the waist and prevents the silhouette from overwhelming a smaller frame.
- Choose a high rise. High-rise flares sit at the natural waist, which creates the illusion of longer legs from the waist down. See our Denim Rise Guide for more.
- Avoid cropped tops that hit at the hip. They can visually cut the body in half. Aim for a top that ends at or just above the natural waist.
Styling Flare Jeans If You're Average Height (5'4" – 5'7")
You have the most flexibility with flare jeans. Most standard inseam lengths (30–32") will work well.
- Heels are optional. A flat mule, pointed-toe flat, or low-heeled boot can all work — just make sure the hem still grazes the top of the shoe.
- Try a half-tuck. A half-tucked blouse or oversized shirt adds a relaxed, editorial feel without losing the waist definition.
- Experiment with proportions. A slightly oversized top can work beautifully with a flare — the volume at the hem balances the volume at the top.
Styling Flare Jeans If You're Tall (5'8" and Above)
Taller frames can wear flare jeans with flats and still get the full elongating effect.
- Go full length. Look for inseams of 32–34" to get the hem close to the floor. Browse our Full Length Jeans (30–34" Inseam).
- Try a longer top. A longline blazer or duster cardigan pairs beautifully with flares on a taller frame — the length of the top echoes the length of the leg.
- Wear with flats or low boots. You don't need a heel to make flares work — the length of your leg does the work for you.
The One Rule That Applies to Every Height
The hem should graze the floor (or the top of your shoe). If the flare is bunching at the ankle or sitting above the shoe, the silhouette won't read correctly. When in doubt, size up in inseam and have the hem tailored — it makes a significant difference.
