Rise is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — measurements in denim. It determines where your waistband sits on your body, which affects everything from comfort to how your silhouette looks. Here's what you need to know.
What Is Rise?
Rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. It tells you how high or low the jeans will sit on your torso. Most jeans fall into three categories: low rise, mid rise, and high rise.
Low Rise (7–10")
Low-rise jeans sit below the natural waist, typically at the hip. They were a dominant trend in the early 2000s and have seen a revival in recent years. They work best on those who prefer a relaxed, casual feel and tend to elongate the leg. However, they can be less comfortable for all-day wear and may not suit all body types.
Mid Rise (10–11")
Mid-rise jeans sit just below the natural waist. They're the most universally flattering rise — comfortable, versatile, and easy to style. If you're new to denim shopping or want a reliable everyday fit, mid rise is a great starting point.
High Rise (11" and above)
High-rise jeans sit at or above the natural waist. They're the most popular rise in contemporary denim for good reason: they define the waist, smooth the midsection, and create a long-leg illusion. Our Risen Tummy Control High Rise Straight Jeans and MIOU MUSE High Rise Wide Leg Denim Pants are customer favorites in this category.
How to Measure Your Rise
- Lay a pair of well-fitting pants flat on a surface.
- Measure from the bottom of the crotch seam straight up to the top of the waistband.
- That measurement is your rise.
Which Rise Is Right for You?
- Want to define your waist? Go high rise. It cinches naturally at the narrowest point of your torso.
- Want all-day comfort? Mid rise offers the best balance of coverage and ease of movement.
- Want a relaxed, casual look? Low rise can work — just size up slightly for comfort.
- Petite frames: High rise adds the illusion of length and elongates the leg.
- Taller frames: All rises work well — choose based on the silhouette you want.
Rise and Silhouette: How They Work Together
Rise and leg shape are closely linked. High-rise styles pair especially well with wide-leg and flare silhouettes — the contrast between a fitted waist and a voluminous leg creates a balanced, editorial look. Browse our Flare Jeans and Full Length Jeans to see this pairing in action.
Tummy Control and Rise
High-rise jeans with built-in tummy control panels offer extra smoothing and support. Our Risen Tummy Control High Rise Straight Jeans and Risen High Rise Tummy Control Straight Pants are designed with this in mind — structured enough to smooth, comfortable enough to wear all day.
