Finding the right inseam length is one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps in buying jeans that actually fit. The wrong inseam can make even the most flattering cut look off. Here's how to find yours.
What Is Inseam Length?
Inseam is the measurement from the crotch seam to the hem of the pant. It determines where the leg of your jeans falls — whether that's at the ankle, mid-calf, or pooling at the floor. Most jeans come in inseam lengths ranging from 24" to 34".
Inseam Length by Height Guide
Use this as a starting point. Your preferred rise, shoe height, and how you like your jeans to break will all influence the final fit.
- Under 5'2" — Cropped inseams (24"–27") are your best friend. They hit at a flattering point and avoid bunching at the ankle. Shop our Cropped Jeans (24–27" Inseam).
- 5'2" – 5'5" — Ankle-length inseams (26"–29") work beautifully. They graze the ankle for a clean, modern look. Shop our Ankle Length Jeans (26–29" Inseam).
- 5'5" – 5'8" — You have the most flexibility. Ankle (28"–30") and full-length (30"–32") inseams both work depending on the silhouette.
- 5'8" and above — Full-length inseams (30"–34") give you the coverage and proportion you need. Shop our Full Length Jeans (30–34" Inseam).
Inseam and Silhouette: What to Know
The silhouette of your jeans also affects how inseam length reads on your body:
- Flare and wide-leg styles generally look best with a longer inseam — the extra length lets the flare open up fully. See our Flare Jeans.
- Straight and slim cuts are more forgiving across inseam lengths.
- Bootcut styles are designed to sit over a boot heel — a 30"–32" inseam is typically ideal. Browse our Bootcut Jeans.
- Cuffed styles are intentionally cropped and styled with a rolled hem — inseam is built into the design. Shop our Cuffed Style Jeans.
How to Measure Your Inseam at Home
- Put on a pair of well-fitting pants.
- Use a soft measuring tape and measure from the crotch seam straight down to where you want the hem to fall.
- That number is your inseam. Round to the nearest half-inch.
